Making an impact for the health, education, equality and protection of children everywhere

In January 1 2007, MIG BANK joined with UNICEF to support its role as the world's driving force for the equality of children. MIG BANK backs this initiative by donating a percentage of its profits to UNICEF projects annually. This year marks our fourth anniversary of the partnership.

Supporting Girl's Education in Uttar Pradesh

As India's largest and most populous state, Uttar Pradesh suffers from one of the highest rates of female illiteracy. A lack of schools is one of the reasons for this but not the primary problem. There is a general low value placed on education for girls, aggravated by the lack of participation within communities overall, which creates a low enrollment level particularly for girls between 8 and 11 years old. Older girls drop out because of forced marriage, which is of greater frequency in girls coming from untouchable or indigenous groups.
In support of UNICEF's projects in Uttar Pradesh, M I G BANK has allocated fifty percent of its donation support towards educational campaigns which will train and support teachers, organize Meena puppet shows for awareness creation within the community about the importance of education of girls, provide technical support to advance academic activities, and use radio campaigns to educate affected communities about various educational issues.
The project aims to support UNICEF's greater role in the state, which is to build schools, train teachers, and mobilize communities to increase the demand for quality education.
M I G BANK chose to support this project because of our strong belief in equal opportunity and education for all, especially for children through providing more chances to succeed in life by equipping them with basic levels of education. Because of the strong role women traditionally play in the association and reinforcement of the family, the project's particular focus on girl's education is highly pivotal within their society. Through basic education these girls will not only be more equipped to overcome their own adversities, but once they are adults, will be able to strengthen the foundation of the family unit for the betterment of their society overall.

Providing Child Friendly Schools in Malawi

Malawi is one of the world's poorest, most densely populated and least developed nations, rife with drought, poverty and the spreading of HIV/AIDS. These difficult circumstances dramatically affect the potential for children to complete even the most basic levels of education. Malawi is further hampered by the lack of available schools, insufficient teaching material, and qualified teachers.
In recognition of the drastic need for support, M I G BANK has proportioned fifty percent of its total donations to UNICEF towards the building of schools and basic infrastructure improvements in order to make water and sanitation systems available in them. We are honored to be able to support UNICEF's core project in Malawi already underway to create 1000 new schools, sanitation systems, and to provide educational material to students and high quality training to 8000 teachers. UNICEF also plans to award 10,000 orphans with scholarships and much needed educational material, including text books, stationery, and school uniforms.
M I G BANK's assistance in UNICEF's Malawi Schools project is deeply rooted in our philosophy for equal education opportunities for children. As one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world, Malawi?s plight is that much more imperative to our humanitarian agenda. We believe that through education, the likelihood of these children acquiring a better life will be significantly impacted.
